Authorities of the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) have formed a three-member committee to probe the incident of question paper leak through SMS by an examiner, Ankit Mehta.
This committee comprises members of GTU examination committee, said exam coordinator at the institute GP Vadodaria.
Interestingly, while the university officials claimed they have lodged a police complaint in the case, inspector DR Vadher of Gujarat University police station said, they have not been approached by GTU officials. “We don’t know anything of this case as we have not received any complaint from the university (GTU) in this matter. We can respond only after officials lodge a proper FIR.
As of now we haven’t been approached by the university officials,” Vadher said.
Mehta, a computer teacher at Alpha One college in Khatraj, was deputed an observer in an examination hall of government engineering college in sector 28 in Gandhinagar. However, on Tuesday, he was caught red-handed while trying to send SMS to five students and a professor, Neerav Gadhiya, informing them of questions in the fifth semester exam for Oriented Programming with Java language.
Vadodaria said that the five students and the professor have been called for further enquiry on December 5.
According to sources, Mehta who is pursuing ME, is not qualified to be a computer teacher, though he was given the job at the college.
“During enquiry, we will be able to know exact details. So far we have learnt that one of the students and Mehta were room mates. Their association may be the reason why he thought of leaking information,” said Vadodaria.
He added that GTU has also asked for Mehta’s background. “It is learnt that Mehta reached the exam centre two hours early. We are trying to probe the reason behind his reaching the centre so early and if there are more people helping him,” he said. Meanwhile, Mehta’s cell phone has been confiscated.
Learning from the incident, the GTU officials have made it a rule to assign the task of an observer only to those at the level of senior associate professor and above. “Also, we are mulling a proposal to create the post of two observers at the exam centre,” Vadodaria said.
