This is the supermodel of the horse world: a breed known as the Akhal-Teke. It’s one of the most visually striking breeds I’ve ever come across – they’re famous for their natural metallic bloom of their coat which is just absolutely breathtaking.
Akhal-Teke horses can come in a wide variety of colors including bay, black, chestnut, palomino, cremello, perlino, and grey but the most stunning examples are those with a golden buckskin or palomino color, with a distinctive metallic sheen that gives it the appearance of being forged from shimmering gold.
The Akhal-Teke is the national emblem of Turkmenistan and are thought to be one of the oldest surviving horse breeds in the world. Aside from their incredible coats, their known for their speed and endurance on long marches.
The horses in the photos are what’s known as cremellos, or “double-dilute” chestnuts, that characteristically have Rosy pink skin and pale blue eyes. The genetics can be a bit confusing to explain, so if you’re interesting in learning more visit thiswikipedia article.
This “golden horse” was originally circulated on the web as being a photoshopped hoax, but that is indeed not the case.
