INTRODUCTION:

Automation as ever leads innovation on the Shop floor with concepts such as machine to machine communication and the IoTs. These complement, augment and facilitate the traditional focus areas in production leading to leaner and more efficient processes which target improvements in the bottom-line. The Internet of Things (IoT) has accentuated the need for turning human intervention to more value adding activities whereas 3-D printing has radicalized the view from “demand based manufacturing” to “on demand manufacturing”.  Let us have a preview into the current trends in global manufacturing and current challenges from an Indian context.
