With an overnight stopover in the impressively modern Bangkok Airport, we had time for the following half-day visit, October 18, 2007:
  • Sleep at the very nice Hotel Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport.
  • Taxi downtown for sightseeing.
  • Spontaneously hire a private long tail boat tour to see Buddhist temples along the Chao Phraya river and a side canal (khlong or klong).
  • Walk through the aptly named Grand Palace, which includes the rich complex of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
  • Eat good basic Thai food at Rub Aroon restaurant, across from the oldest and biggest Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Wat Pho.
  • Carol and I enjoyed Bangkok on our way to a month in spectacular Nepal.
  • Jet lag: Bangkok time is Pacific Standard Time (Seattle) plus 15 hours.
The Grand Palace (or Phra Borom Maha Ratcha Wang, in Thai) in Bangkok, Thailand, was built on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River starting in 1782, during the reign of Rama I. The Grand Palace served as the official residence of the king of Thailand from the 18th century to the mid-20th century. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) is a stunning complex of Buddhist historical buildings within the grounds of the Grand Palace.
