About The Conference
The financial sector would be open to international competition
once the tone for the rules of the game is set under the WTO.
Banks will have to gear up to meet stringent prudential capital
adequacy norms under Base1- II and Base1- III as they compete
with banks with greater financial strength. In the past, mergers
were initiated by regulators to protect the interest of depositors
of weak banks. But, it is now expected that market led mergers
may gain momentum in the coming years. While the banking
system in India has done fairly well in adjusting to the new
market dynamics, survived the global sub-prime financial crisis
and is fairly sound and stable due to strong regulatory
framework, it would not be clichéd to say again that greater
challenges lie ahead.
The emerging scenario is also turning favorable to the process
of consolidation. Mounting pressures to issue new bank licenses,
which will induce enhanced competition from foreign banks
getting full bank licenses, and entry of a new set of private
sector banks, will also precipitate the PSB consolidation.
